The roofs in Nelson
Nelson is a cotton town and it looks like one. Street after street of gritstone terraces put up between the 1870s and the First World War, most of them under Welsh blue slate, built quickly and built tight together.
That housing stock has a particular set of problems, and after enough years working on it you stop being surprised by any of them:
- Nail fatigue
- These roofs are now well past a hundred years old. The slate is often perfectly sound while the nails holding it have rusted to nothing, which is why slates start slipping one at a time for no apparent reason. Whether the nails have gone is the single question that decides repair or re-slate, and it takes lifting a few slates to answer.
- Chimney stacks and flashings
- Terraces have a lot of stacks, and every one is a junction where water can get in. A great many round here have a wedge of cement where proper lead flashing should be, and cement cracks. Damp on a chimney breast in a Nelson terrace is a flashing problem far more often than a roof problem.
- Shared valleys and party walls
- Where terraces meet, the detailing matters, and work on your roof can affect next door’s. Worth knowing before somebody starts.
- Exposure
- Nelson sits high with the moors above it and very little between the weather and the rooftops. Ridge pointing and verges take more of a beating here than they would twenty miles west.
The Whitefield area is a conservation area, and one of the better preserved pieces of Victorian workers' housing in the county. If you are there, expect materials to be specified rather than chosen.
There is post-war and later housing too, on the estates out towards Marsden and Bradley, and those are mostly under concrete interlocking tile with a different problem list, usually starting with failed ridge bedding.

Alex has just repaired chimney (putting right someone else’s bad work mainly) and ridge. Used Alex before after storm in 2022 brought guttering down on my 300 yr old cottage.
